Road pavement cracking and deterioration

The Problem

Why Roads Fail

Roads do not fail because the surface wears out — they fail because the layers beneath the surface lose their structural integrity. Water infiltrates the pavement, weakens the base materials, reduces bearing capacity, and eventually leads to expensive reconstruction.

1Water infiltrates the pavement layers
2Base materials lose structural integrity
3Bearing capacity is reduced
4Rutting, cracking and potholes develop
5Costly reconstruction becomes unavoidable

EcoSmart stabilises the entire structural pavement layer — creating a stronger, moisture-resistant foundation capable of supporting heavy traffic and harsh environmental conditions.

The EcoSmart Stabilisation Process

The EcoSmart methodology follows internationally recognised pavement construction practices while incorporating our advanced polymer stabilisation technology.

01

Step 01 — Pavement Assessment

Every Great Road Starts with Understanding the Ground

Before any construction begins, our engineering team evaluates the existing pavement to determine the right approach for your specific conditions.

  • Soil classification
  • Plasticity Index (PI)
  • Moisture content
  • Existing pavement thickness
  • Traffic loading requirements
  • Drainage conditions
  • Material suitability for stabilisation

02

Step 02 — Product Selection

Selecting the Right Solution

Different pavement materials require different stabilisation approaches. Our product range covers the full spectrum of soil plasticity conditions.

  • ES21L — PI below 12: crushed rock, gravel, highway and airport pavements
  • ES11L — PI 12–20: clay gravels, silty gravels, rural and regional roads
  • ES100 — Challenging soils: heavy clay, mining, major infrastructure projects

Step 03 — Pavement Preparation

Preparing the Foundation

Existing pavement materials are prepared using conventional stabilisation techniques before polymer application begins.

  • Surveying and setting out
  • Traffic management
  • Identifying underground services
  • Shaping the pavement
  • Removing unsuitable material where necessary
  • Establishing the required stabilisation depth

During stabilisation, the polymer bonds with clay fines within the pavement material, producing a treated layer that:

Resists water penetration
Maintains natural dry strength
Improves bearing capacity
Remains flexible
Prevents premature pavement failure
Does not leach into the environment

Because EcoSmart polymers are insoluble, they remain permanently within the pavement structure, delivering long-term performance even under severe weather conditions. Treated pavements remain flexible, require low application rates (typically around 1.5% by dry mass), are compatible with conventional stabilising equipment, and can be remixed during future rehabilitation.
